ESP once again put on a fantastic event at SIEC for the 2012 Summer Classic. We could not have asked for better weather throughout the weekend.
Scottie Barclay and his girlfriend Claire Groome joined us on a trip with Tulara Balouf and Dan Leech’s unorthodox but talented “Blue’s My Name”.
Bluey impressed us all by jumping two great rounds in the first and second Mini Prix Qualifiers with 4 and 8 faults respectively. Balouf jumped some lovely rounds in the 1.20m classes but did not feature in the placings. Scott also rode Carisma in the 1.20m classes for me and she went from strength to strength over the show and jumped some great clear rounds and fast jump offs.
Thursdays young horse classes were the source of much enjoyment for a particular member of the team who still manages to get excited over the prospect of having a decent excuse to cross back over to the dark side (hack ring) and dolly up all of the young horses. I must say that it was worth the effort once the photos came out and they all look so smart!
Celso was fantastic in the 4yo class pulling off a great flat work out before jumping a lovely clean showjumping round to finish in 2nd place on 169.5 points only 0.5 behind the winner, Aussie Balou ridden by super talent Tom McDermott.
I stole the ride on Carisma off Scottie for the 6yo young horse championship, in which she produced a lovely flat work out and a double clear showjumping round to finish unofficially in 6th place on points.
Chubby (Volador) rode well in the flat work and was a little unsettled in the jumping phase of the 7yo but still jumped great but did not feature in the placings.
Friday morning Chubby and Carisma (with Scottie this time) both had a start in the 1.20m for 4 faults, which was their only start in ring 1. Alondra jumped two super rounds in the first Mini Prix Qualifier to finish in 4th Place. I also gave Celso a start in the 1m and he jumped a nice clear round.
Saturday saw the 2nd Mini Prix Qualifier which was run as a speed class. Alondra jumped a slick clear round to finish in 5th which meant she qualified 2nd out of 60 starters for the top 20 final on Sunday. Carisma and Chubby both jumped lovely clear rounds in the 1.20m in ring 2 but unfortunately both had a rail each in the jump off.
I only had one start on Sunday in the Mini Prix final as I missed the 1.20m because everything managed to clash! The Mini Prix was a technical enough track which saw only one of the 20 starters jump a clear round. I had a miss at fence 7, a style, so had that down to finish with 4 faults which still left me in 3rd place behind Billy Raymont riding Carneol and Tom McDermott with SL Limerick. In fourth place was Amanda Madigan riding Oaks Altes, George Johnson was 5th with the lovely little mare Wondaree Sprite followed by Tegan Kidner with Federer.
Results from our team:
2nd 4yo Championship – Celso
6th 6yo Championship – Carisma
4th Mini Prix Round 1 Qualifier – Alondra
5th Mini Prix Round 2 Qualifier – Alondra
3rd Mini Prix Final – Alondra
